This social-emotional learning (SEL) program is designed for early childhood learners and is grounded in CASEL’s five core competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Each instructional unit pairs a character value with a developmentally aligned emotion, helping children understand not only what the value looks like in action but also how emotions influence their ability to practice it.

Every lesson follows a consistent, predictable structure that supports neurocognitive development and helps children build attentional readiness. The session begins with Brain Gym, a series of structured movements that prepare the brain for learning, followed by Breathing, where students practice mindful, calming techniques. The third component, a Book, introduces a carefully selected story that highlights the value and emotion of the day, providing concrete examples children can relate to. After the opening routine, students participate in one to three reinforcing activities—such as puppet shows, role-plays, large-group games, or an instructional video—that deepen their understanding through play, modeling, and guided practice.

Each lesson concludes with a rehearsed self-statement designed to strengthen self-efficacy, emotional vocabulary, and internalized regulation strategies. These affirmations, such as “I am focused. I look, listen, think,” help children connect language to action and build confidence in their ability to manage emotions and demonstrate positive character traits.
